GALLE THE HOME BASE OF SMTI
The home base of Southern Maritime Training Institute; the historic port city of Galle, holds a vibrant story of its own. Located on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka, it has been a significant trading hub and strategic location for centuries, attracting merchants and travelers from across the world. The city is home to a rich history that spans over two thousand years.
The recorded early history of Galle runs way back to the ancient kingdoms of Sri Lanka. The city was an important center for trade and commerce during the time of the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa Kingdoms. Galle was a key port of call for Arab traders who came to Sri Lanka to trade spices, gems, and other commodities.
It was in the early 16th century when the Portuguese arrived on the island and took control of Galle. They built a fort and a series of churches and other buildings, many of which still stand today.
Then the Dutch took over Galle from the Portuguese in 1640. They strengthened the fortifications, built new buildings, and transformed the city into a bustling commercial center. Galle became a key port for the Dutch East India Company’s trade with the East Indies, and the city’s strategic location made it an important center for naval operations.
The port city of Galle continued to serve the Dutch until the British took control of Galle in 1796 and established a new administrative system. They made significant changes to the city’s infrastructure, including building new roads and bridges and introducing new technologies such as railways and telegraph lines. Galle continued to thrive under British rule and became an important center for the cultivation and export of tea, rubber, and other crops.
Today, the city is declared as a UNESCO World Heritage-listed fort. Galle’s vibrant cultural scene and friendly locals make it a popular destination for travelers from all over the world.
