The Able Seafarer Engine course is designed to train experienced seafarers to upgrade their level of knowledge and skills. This training will enable experienced seafarers to qualify with the recognized qualification as per the STCW Convention and Code, as Able Seafarer Engine. 

The Able Seafarer Engine course is to meet the mandatory minimum requirements for the knowledge, understanding and proficiency specified in STCW code section A-III/5, table A-III/5 for the following functions.

Function 1: Marine engineering at the support level.

Function 2: Electrical, electronic and control engineering at the support level.

Function 3: Maintenance and repair at the support level.

Function 4: Controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons on board at the support Level.

Upon the completion of this course, trainees

  • Will meet the STCW mandatory minimum requirements for Abel Seafarer Deck, as per the 1978 STCW Convention and Code – STCW Code Table A-III/5 as amended 
  • Will have the knowledge, understanding and proficiency to;
    • Contribute to a safe engineering watch
    • Contribute to monitoring and controlling an engine-room watch
    • Contribute to fuelling and oil transfer operations.
    • Contribute to bilge and ballast operations; and
    • Contribute to the operation of equipment and machinery.
    • Contribute to shipboard maintenance and repair.
    • Contribute to the handling of stores
    • Apply precautions and contribute to the prevention of pollution of the marine environment.
    • Apply occupation health and safety procedure

Intake Limitations

Maximum 24 students per course.

Academic Faculty

Our training will be delivered by properly qualified lecturers and instructors who have the qualifications as specified in MSN 03/2022 issued by the Director General of Merchant Shipping, Merchant Shipping Secretariat, Sri Lanka.

Entry Requirements

The candidate shall not be less than 18 years of age and while qualified to serve as a rating forming part of an engineering watch, having completed approved seagoing service in the engine department of not less than 18 months without a training record book (TRB). Not less than 12 months with a training record book (TRB) ACCEPTABLE TO THE DGMS. Have a valid medical certificate issued in accordance with STCW Reg. 1/9, Section A-1/9, ACCEPTABLE TO THE DGMS.
