The aim of this course is to meet the minimum mandatory standards pertaining to key competencies for,

  • Plan and conduct a passage and determine position
  • Maintain a safe navigation watch
  • Respond to emergencies
  • Respond to a distress signal at sea• Manoeuvre the ship

required for Navigation Watchkeeping officers to attain approved simulator training where appropriate in accordance with section A-II/1 as set out in table A-II/1 of the STCW Code.

To gain practical knowledge understanding and proficiency on,

  • Terrestrial and coastal navigation
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to use nautical charts, and publications
  • Electronic systems of position fixing and navigation
  • Navigation Watch keeping
  • Content, application and intent of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972, as amended
  • Principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch
  • Blind pilotage techniques
  • Bridge resource management
  • Respond to emergencies and procedures
  • Search and rescue
  • Ship manoeuvring and handling

Intake Limitations

Maximum 12 students per course.

Academic Faculty

Our training will be delivered by properly qualified lecturers and instructors who have the qualifications as specified in MSN 03/2022 issued by the Director General of Merchant Shipping, Merchant Shipping Secretariat, Sri Lanka.

Entry Requirements

Shall have at least 12 months of sea time, having completed approved radar observation and plotting, automatic radar plotting and radar ARPA simulator courses with introductory knowledge and experience on bridge navigation watch keeping.

Others who require simulator-based navigation Watchkeeping training, such as those employed in harbour and customs patrol launches, would also benefit from the course; in that case, the entry requirements could be modified to fit the specifics. Nonetheless, the trainees enrolled in each course ought to typically come from comparable backgrounds. The principal will evaluate their credentials and experience, and enrolment will be at the principal’s discretion.
