Southern Maritime Training Institute (SMTI) recently hosted a specialised training programme for selected youth aspiring to pursue professional careers as longline fishing crew members, supporting the development of a skilled, competent, and professional workforce for Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector.
The programme brought together young trainees from the Kalmunai Fisheries District, providing them with an opportunity to develop essential knowledge, skills, and professional competencies relevant to working in the fisheries and maritime sectors.
The training programme was attended by several distinguished guests and representatives from key government institutions, international organisations, industry stakeholders, and the fisheries community.
Among the distinguished guests were Mr. Susantha Kahawaththa, Director General of the Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Mr. R.P.J. Rajapakse, Director General of Merchant Shipping, Sri Lanka, and Ms. Sonya Belete, South Asian Regional Director of DVV International. The programme was also attended by representatives from DVV International, the Korean Recruitment Agency, and the Fisheries Association.
The participation of these stakeholders reflects the importance of collaboration between government authorities, international development organisations, recruitment partners, training institutions, and industry representatives in creating sustainable employment opportunities for Sri Lankan youth.
As Sri Lanka continues to develop its fisheries and maritime sectors, there is an increasing need for properly trained personnel who can meet professional standards and adapt to the operational requirements of the industry.
Through this initiative, SMTI aims to contribute its expertise in maritime and vocational training while supporting young people in gaining the competencies required to pursue meaningful employment opportunities within the fisheries sector.
The programme also highlights the importance of providing youth from fishing communities with access to structured training and career pathways that can enhance their employability and contribute to the long-term development of the sector.
The involvement of DVV International, government authorities, recruitment partners, and representatives of the fisheries community demonstrates a collaborative approach towards youth development and workforce advancement.
SMTI remains committed to working with industry and development partners to provide practical, industry-oriented training programmes that contribute to the development of Sri Lanka’s maritime and fisheries workforce.
The Institute looks forward to supporting further initiatives that empower Sri Lankan youth with the knowledge, skills, and professional opportunities needed to build successful careers while contributing to the sustainable growth of the country’s maritime and fisheries sectors.
Southern Maritime Training Institute (SMTI) remains committed to training today’s youth for the maritime and fisheries workforce of tomorrow.
